How much thought have you given your toilet paper? I gave toilet paper a lot of thought whilst doing the Plastic Free July Challenge.  So here is what I discovered for three brands available in Gippsand:

Coles Quilton 20 pack – $10

  • 3ply 200 sheets per roll
  • Plastic wrap
  • Australian owned and made, endorsed by Ausbuy
  • Made from some recycled and sustainable forestry sources, uses some chemicals
  • In the past 10 years has donated $6.2million to Australian causes
  • $0.26 per 100 sheets

Safe 6 pack $6.18

  • 2 ply
  • 400 sheets per roll
  • Paper wrap coated with plastic on the inside*
  • Australian owned and made
  • Recycled and doesn’t use chemicals
  • Helps raise funds for Planet Ark campaigns
  • $0.26 per 100 sheets (but less ply than both)

*Yes this is true. Here is the response from Planet Ark “Safe remains the only toilet tissue brand that offers a mixed paper wrap, all other retail products in the market are 100 plastic. The packaging has not changed for more than 15 years and has always had a light plastic coating, to enable us to seal the packs.”

Who Gives A Crap 48 pack $48

  • 3 ply
  • 400 sheets per roll
  • Delivered in box (can subscribe and choose intervals for delivery), individual rolls wrapped in paper
  • Australian owned, made in China by people, not machines, to create jobs in the developing world
  • Recycled and doesn’t use chemicals
  • 50% of profits go to building toilets and improving sanitation in the developing world
  • $0.25 per 100 sheets but unfortunately some parts of Gippsland don’t receive free shipping . This adds $8 the cost making the final price…
    $0.29 per 100 sheets.

Conclusion

Price and convenience are pretty even across the three brands and all companies are Australian owned, but, how and where they are made are different so I guess this is where your decision lies. I would make your choice based on what is important to you, plastic free or local products? For now I’ve chosen to use WGAC.

UPDATE 2: I’ve since discovered a new brand of toilet paper. Excitingly it’s plastic free and made from bamboo and sugarcane waste. Read more: Plastic free and tree free toilet paper – I want it now!

    1. Interesting, the WGAC? I would have thought they all break down. We just had our septic tank cleaned out and it was in really good condition. Do you know why this is so?

  5. Hi Tammy, thank you for the blog – I have so much gratitude for the work and research that you do on this site – it’s fantastic. I use WGAC and have been for quite some time now – I was just wondering why you decided to use Pure Planet instead?

    1. I use them interchangeably at the moment. But I like that pure planet doesn’t use trees at all. My understanding is that bamboo harvesting is more eco friendly than tree harvesting. So even though they both use waste, the industry behind each one is different. I know some people think WGAC is too scratchy (not me) and pp is very soft.

  6. Been using WGAC for over a year. It is NOT septic suitable. It simply dies not break down. Our septic pumpout contracter strongly urged us to change brands. Such as shame as we love the ethos behind the brand. The quality is great, price, good, convenience fantastic, just clogs up septic.

  8. I’m looking for commercial jumbo roll toilet paper. I know WGAC has it. Does anyone know of other brands that do?
