Bargain hunters, sustainable shoppers, up-cyclers, artists, collectors, renovators and more will be in for a treat when the Poowong Pickers Festival returns on Sunday October 20th for a sixth year!
I took a break in 2018 due to ill health but I’m hoping this year will be bigger and better than ever!
During the festival, Poowong residents hold simultaneous garage sales to ensure as many of their unwanted items as possible get reused rather than sent to landfill.
Non-Poowong residents can get involved in the selling action too, by registering to have a stall at the Poowong Public Hall.
In previous years 30 – 50 households have registered their garage sales and stalls.

The Poowong Pickers Festival is all about environmental responsibility, community, creativity, thriftiness, and the thrill of the hunt!
Anything and everything is up for sale; it’s the one day of the year when all the weird and wonderful things from any decade are unearthed from sheds, attics and garages across the town.
Clearing out the clutter and getting things back into circulation maximises the energy and finite resources that went into making the stuff.
People meet and talk to their neighbours, fellow bargain hunters, and generally delight in others’ unneeded stuff which makes those people selling their items feel great about them being rehomed.
Being part of the Poowong Pickers Festival is being part of a global movement of people transitioning from ‘consumer’ to ‘citizen’ through buying less of everything and buying everything you do need secondhand. It’s also about making room for things that really matter, like relationships and experiences.
The festival will run from 8.30am – 12pm Sunday 20th October to coincide with the National Garage Sale Trail weekend and Buy Nothing New Month.

I thought about it but I am fairly new to this city and don’t really know people. Something like this might already exsit, but I’m not on social media and miss out on local events. Right now I am selling my stuff locally using online websites/apps. I’ve already donated 4 laundry baskets of items to Goodwill.
