Telstra is scamming people into taking home accessories they don’t want or need by telling them in-store that it’s all free and part of their new plan; staff even pressure people into taking the accessories after significant protest because, as they stress, it’s all for FREE! But then the bill arrives and there’s an ARO or Accessories Repayment Option of between $10 – $20 per month for these ‘free’ accessories. This is not only deceitful and despicable behaviour, it hurts people financially and massively contributes to a growing ewaste problem! It’s incredibly irresponsible and I’m pissed off. It happened to me a couple of years ago, even after I spent about 3 hours in the store going over all our details to make sure I understood what we were getting and how much it would cost. I told the Telstra employee that I did not want any of the accessories I was being offered because I had no use for a purse with a built-in charger or most of the other crap that was offered. But the employee continued to pressure me to pick out some accessories because it was FREE. I reluctantly settled on a portable speaker which might be useful for my presentations and a power bank to take hiking. But then the bill arrived… when I realised I was paying for these accessories I was embarrassed and blamed myself for the error. Then last month the same thing happened to my husband. Despite significant protest, they convinced him that all the items in this photo were for free and that he had to take them. As it turns out, his bill contains not one but FOUR different repayment plans that he didn’t want! We were furious. We found other people online complaining about this and there are even Telstra employees admitting to this practice. A few people have been successful at having their money returned but have still had to pay cancellation fees. Others give up and hoard the accessories in drawers and cupboards. Some people give their accessories away and don’t even realise they’re paying for them. And some people end up keeping the accessories and devices because they loaded all their ‘stuff’ onto them and now feel they can’t give them back, (continued in comments)

Stocks and broths are a great way to give meals like this one I made the other night a boost in flavour and nutrients. 😋For a few years now I’ve been making my own liquid stocks but when I started making lightweight hiking meals I went looking for zero waste dried stock. I know many of you aren’t interested in stock powder for hiking reasons but some of you may prefer to keep stock in the pantry rather than take up large amounts of freezer space with frozen liquids and some of you probably just don’t want to make stock or broth yourself because of the time commitment, so you might be interested in what I found. The was nothing I could buy from bulk bins near me so I looked around my local stores and found some great brands who are thinking carefully about the packaging they use and their ingredients. @tone_made was one (made in Gippsland) and @san_elk was another (made in West Footscray). And @stellaspantry gave me the idea to make my own dried stock from ingredients I can buy from bulk stores like @stringandsalt and/or my own garden produce. I wrote a blog post with more details about the options for zero waste stock (link in profile).

Trying to establish more sustainable behaviours? It's a common misconception that it takes 21 days to change a behaviour. It turns out that the research (link below) says this is the minimum amount of time required and it can actually take up to 254 days to change a behaviour! The research shows that on *average* a new behaviour becomes automatic after 66 days (2 months). It also shows that you can make mistakes occasionally without having a detrimental impact on the long term habit you are trying to establish – that’s a good thing! So remember behaviour change is a process that is different for everyone. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and get back on track. If you keep forgetting your reusable shopping bags, think of strategies to make it easier until it does become automatic. Other research shows that it's important for you to identify the barriers which might stop you from making a change. Once you have identified the barriers, work out what you need to do to address each one, then do it. For example, if you want to start composting to remove your need for a bin liner and reduce your overall waste, but find composting unpleasant or inconvenient because you have to trudge to the back corner of the yard in Winter, then remove that barrier by finding a method of composting that is more to your liking and/or move your composting system to a more convenient location. Change is often more manageable when you understand how to over come what's been holding you back.
