After some sweltering hot days this Summer and the kids nagging me to buy Zooper Dooper tubes, I decided to meet them in the middle and buy these Zipzicles which are reusable ice pop molds. They look and behave just like Zooper Dooper frozen tubes but without the waste and I can decide what ingredients go in them. I know there are reusable ice block moulds out there made from stainless steel or rigid plastic but they take up heaps of freezer space, need to be kept upright while freezing, and you can only make six at a time which doesn't work for us; they're also quite costly (so are the silicone tubes). And, I think the Zipzicles freeze quicker. We've used, washed, and reused the Zipzicles four times now without an issue, although the zip seal is so good that I worry I might rip the plastic trying to open them (running under warm water for a few seconds might help). They haven't been a drama to wash but I haven't tried to thoroughly dry them yet, as once they have been washed and drained we refill them and pop them back in the freezer. The kids are happy and enjoy deciding what to put in the tubes and we all like that there's a lot less plastic being used. I've found it easy to fill them by holding the tube in one hand and pouring the ingredients from a jug. It cost $9.95 for a pack of 36 (5cm x 23cm). They're made from #7 plastic that is food-safe, freezer-grade, and third party tested BPA-free, BPS-free, and phthalate-free. These are fine to REDcycle at the end of their life but please note that this should not be generalised to all code 7 packaging. This has been confirmed by RED Group staff. Head to my profile for link.
Brewing a new batch of kombucha. I dissolve the sugar and steep the loose leaf tea (equivalent of 5 black tea bags and 3 green tea bags) in this jug of hot water because it will cool down quicker than 4 litres of hot water and is easier to manage. I’ll split the amount between my two jars which contain a SCOBY and some left over kombucha from my last batch. Then I’ll add another 1.25L of cool water to each jar and leave it to brew for a week before tasting. If you want to make vinegar from it just let it brew for a number of weeks and the acetic acid concentration will get stronger. . . . #guthealth #guthealing #Kombucha #looseleaftea #fermentedfoods #fermentedtea #zerowaste #singleuseplasticfree
I agonise over every purchasing decision and usually find reasons not to buy something, for instance, many of you know I brew my own kombucha vinegar and use it for all my vinegar needs so why would I buy this Cider Tonic? Well diversity is a good thing, especially when it comes to looking after our gut microbiome (which I’m working on at the moment along with reducing inflammation in my body) but what got me over the line is that this product is owned and made in Gippsland with many Gippsland ingredients and I like to support local business for environmental, social and economic reasons, AND I can return the bottle to the store where I bought it for collection, cleaning and refilling. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It’s also not just Apple cider vinegar. It includes heaps of goodness from things like garlic, 🌶 chilli, turmeric, ginger, herbs and citrus. Anyway, bottle return schemes are still so rare so I thought @cidertonic deserved a shout out, and we’re enjoying the product. . . . @udderandhoe #loch #gippsland #supportlocalgippsland @supportlocalgippsland #latrobevalley #zerowaste #plasticfree #guthealth #guthealing #cidertonic #supportlocal #goingzerowaste #zerowastelife #reusablebottle #reuserevolution #choosetoreuse #sustainabilitygippsland #ecofriendly
The gut health presentation I went to earlier this week by @drpeterdingle has encouraged me to try green tea again (I tried years ago but was like 🤮). So today I tottered down to my local mini bulk store @udderandhoe in Loch and filled up my homemade bulk tea bag. And you know what, I actually really enjoyed my green tea ☕️ this afternoon! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pretty sure I can keep this up, along with the 1/2 teaspoon of bicarb soda first thing every morning and 10ml of raw vinegar. 💃🏼 I’m determined to shut down RA and regain some vitality. 💪🏻 . . . . #zerowaste #bulkisbeautiful #plasticfree #RAsucks #guthealth #lowtoxlife #gutmicrobiome #goingzerowaste #zerowastelife #sustainability #ethicalpurchase #supportlocal #ecofriendly #gippsland #southgippsland #loch #udderandhoe #greentea #bulktea
