You might have seen from my stories that I found an aloe vera plant in a hidden place in our garden and that it had produced a number of ‘pups’. The plant needed repotting so it was the perfect opportunity to divide the pups from the main plant and start new ones. Plant division is another great way to create abundance in the garden and increase our resilience to changing circumstances (see my previous post on cuttings to propagate more fig trees). If all the plants successfully take, there’ll be more than I need so I decided to gather up some tin cans from our recycling to create some plant pots that I’d be happy to give away or exchange for other plants that I’d like. Swapping and sharing our abundances is such a delightful thing to do and it's how I've been filling my garden with goodies and distributing my excess for years. I use local channels to let people know what I am seeking for my garden and what I could exchange with them in return. I often feel that I get more than I give but that’s because I am giving away what I don’t need and receiving things I look forward to. Plus people enjoy the exchange so much they often like to give and give. I’m currently paying more attention to the plants around my home and how they might be useful (we’ve been here a year and a half now). The Hawthorn shrub has only ever been known to me as a declared noxious weed that should be removed to stop it crowding out native species. I didn’t realise it could be eaten so I’ve been ignoring the shrub at our mailbox, but @milkwood_permaculture shared a post the other day about foraging and using it for heart and immunity care so I wandered down the driveway with a basket to gather some up. There weren’t many berries/haws left so I’m going to dry these out to use for Hawthorn Tea. ☕️ As an immune compromised and immune suppressed person it will be a good little booster and add some diversity to my gut microbiome. There are many ways to get plants into our gardens to increase our food security and resilience, that don’t involve buying from the shops. The best bit is that other methods usually don’t involve any waste, use minimal resources, are incredibly frugal (saving you money while providing you with abundance) and build community connections. Today I was thinking about the figs in our orchard and when they’d be ripe (can I get them before the wildlife does) and one thing led to another and I realised I had an opportunity to propagate more... I can use my extra free plants at our current rental or take them with me if we have to move again, or I can use them to swap with others to get different plants.

Just when I thought all the mending and repairing jobs had been done, I found this Carrom Men board game in the garage that has been on my to-fix list for at least 10years but I’d always put it in the too hard basket for some reason. I brought this game home from Nepal about 15 years ago after learning how to play it with some locals. I can’t remember how to play it now though so I’ve had to do some googling to find the rules. The paint on the board game got damaged by water when the ceiling of a house we lived in began leaking in the spare room. The board game was on top of a cupboard right under the leak. Fast forward to this morning when I found it again in the garage, I remembered that my daughter now had a small collection of paints that I might be able to use. I was allowed to use them as long as I didn’t use too much. 😉 Serendipitously she had perfect colour matches! So I cleaned away the cobwebs 🕸 and dust, wiped back the smudged paint, then set to work filling the gaps with new paint. 🎨 Pretty nerve-racking for someone who doesn’t have the steadiest hand. 🧐 I’m very happy with the results, it still has an authentic, used look about it. And now I want to learn how to play it again with my kids, rather than hide it in the garage. The game is like billiards where you have to sink tokens in the holes but by flicking them with your fingers.
