EWASTE TO LANDFILL BAN starting soon! Today I took our ewaste to one of our nearby transfer stations which is an ewaste collection point. Ewaste is the fastest growing category of waste world wide and in Australia it’s growing 3 times faster than general municipal waste. Basically, ewaste is anything with an plug, battery or cord. It also includes batteries, cables and printer cartridges. When we put waste in landfill we miss an opportunity to recover highly valuable materials that will become very scarce by 2030 if we continue on this track of making things and then dumping them in landfill. We also increase the risk to the environment and human health. So, from the 1st July the Victorian and South Australian governments are banning ewaste from landfill. YOU CAN’T PUT IT IN ANY BIN. It has to go to an ewaste drop off location. To find your nearest drop off location contact your council or go to ewaste.vic.gov.au. You’ll also find much more info there. Many transfer stations will take ewaste; sometimes there’ll be a cost and sometimes there won’t. It depends on your council’s situation. Other places like Officeworks are becoming drop off locations too. There are quite a few options for various types of ewaste so make sure you learn more about it and never put ewaste in the bin.

💙Introducing Latrobe Echo🧡 Morwell Neighbourhood House has launched it's first social enterprise, The Latrobe Echo, which is a bi-monthly publication you can find at cafes, doctors waiting rooms -anywhere people wait! The Latrobe Echo is a voice for the people of Latrobe Valley, providing content of civic and public interest, with social, environmental and economic themes that impact Latrobe communities. I'm really happy to be contributing to the Sustainability section, and have included tips for people to swap out single-use plastic for Plastic Free July in this second edition. It's *important* that information on sustainable living is not just provided online, as not everyone has the inclination or the ability to access digital information (digital uptake in Morwell is about 60%). This is one of the reasons why I do my talks (next one in Traralgon on 5th July) and work on other community based projects. 💚 Connecting with community.

THIS @plasticfreejuly I’M FOCUSING ON LOCAL FOOD BUSINESSES. I’ve worked really hard on a range of personal and household solutions for plastic free food over the years but I still find it the hardest part of avoiding plastic and waste in my life. Sometimes I just want a break from having to do all the planning ahead and the work of shopping and making things from scratch for a family. Believe me, it gets stressful (although, I do love gardening and growing food) when you feel limited in variety, spontaneity and convenience. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s important to slow down and to eat more homecooked meals – there’s lots of good reasons for that unrelated to waste, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is hard to live slow and low waste in a fast-paced, wasteful culture. So what’s my next step? I’m going to go back to something I focused on when I first started Gippsland Unwrapped. I want to help local food businesses find the information, tools and confidence they need to not only allow people to use their reusable containers but to encourage it. I want to make it more convenient for the business and the customer to get all kinds of food and drinks in reusable containers. The reason I feel ready to focus on this again is because the level of awareness of waste problems and waste solutions is much higher than it was five years ago, there are now other individuals and organisations around me willing to help, there’s more supporting resources available online, and I feel many local businesses are ready to lead the way (some already are, like @theboroughdeptstore in my feature photo). I’m going to start by contacting relevant local government staff, local business associations, and individual local businesses with information, ideas, and resources, to see where that leads. I’ll keep you updated on my progress. I’m also going to share my tips for Bringing Your Own reusables on social media. In the meantime, if you’re a food service business and want to make a start on allowing customers to use reusable containers, check out the resources in my latest blog post. Let's start valuing nature for what it really is. If we don't, we risk missing out on a lot of opportunities that could benefit both the environment and our wellbeing in the broad sense.
