@walkerbooksaus sent me this recently released picture book called Jelly-Boy, to see if I thought you guys would be interested in it. It arrived this morning just before we left for school, so we took a look and I have to say I loved it! It pulled at my heart strings. 💞My kids are beyond picture books now but they got a kick out of it as well. I was anticipating that after I reviewed the book, I would donate it to our local kindergarten - I know they will love it as an introduction to discussions about conservation, the dangers of plastic in the environment, litter, waste and recycling, etc. - but I’m having trouble with the thought of letting it go now! I think it’s a beautiful book with a really simple, yet impactful narrative, and I know this would have been a big hit with my kids when they were younger. The book aims to inspire readers to protect oceans and reduce plastic use, and encourage dialogue around these important issues. So yes, I think you will like this book as well. Here’s some more information about the book and the people who created it: What happens when a jellyfish falls in love with a plastic bag she mistakes for a jelly-boy? Jelly-Boy is different. He is big and strong. And not as wobbly as the other Jelly-boys. By the time Jelly-Girl discovers the dangerous truth about her new friend, it may already be too late. About the Author @NicoleGodwinauthor is a passionate advocate for animals. As an author, her mission is to help young children understand the plight of all living creatures through picture books like Ella (the little elephant) and Billie (the Dolphin). Jelly-Boy is her first book for Walker Books Australia. About the Illustrator @ChristopherNielsen is inspired by his love of vintage design. His work has been acknowledged by The AGDA Awards, 3x3, Communication Arts, American Illustration, Society Of Illustrators NY, Luerzers Archive, Hotshop Awards and The Creative Annual. He has received Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Illustrators Australia Awards.

It’s time I provided an update on my plastic free shampoo & conditioner journey, because it has been a journey of trying different things. I’ve never written a blog post about hair care before but I’ve listed my family’s choices in my complete guide to a zero waste home on my website. One of the reasons I haven’t dedicated a blog post to this topic until now is because I’ve never really been satisfied with the results of what I’ve tried. Four years ago I started with an attempt to go straight from washing every second day with regular shampoo and conditioner to using water only to avoid plastic bottles and reduce the chemicals on my body. I persisted for three months but didn’t notice any improvements on the greasiness. I couldn’t take it anymore so I started using a locally made shampoo bar about once a week. This was much better, but after about a year my hair seemed to be getting very dry and frizzy, so I switched to the method of washing with diluted bicarb soda and rinsing with diluted vinegar. It wasn’t so bad but it wasn’t a breeze to implement either. I continued this for about two years but again my hair was quite frizzy – and then I noticed the smell! 😳 Many people will argue online that hair not washed with shampoo and conditioner smells or does not smell. I can tell you that my hair and scalp developed a strong ‘natural’ smell that was not pleasant (how embarrassing!). I couldn’t smell it all the time, only when weather conditions were damp or humid and when I was physically active. If I could smell it, other people must be able to smell it too, perhaps more often than I noticed it. 🙈 I’m already self conscious about my hair, I have alopecia, so that was the last straw for me and I went out and bought a bottle of shampoo & conditioner. I didn’t feel good about going back to plastic bottles so I looked around for something that was as close as possible to the shampoo and conditioner experience but better for the planet and people. @ethiqueworld shampoo and conditioner bars was the winner for me and after 9months I’m still really happy with them. I lost track of how old these eggs 🥚🥚🥚 were, but no problem, I just did the float test to see if they were still good to eat. Fill a bowl with water and gently place the suspect egg(s) into the water; one at a time. Eggs that stay at the bottom lying on its’ side = very fresh Eggs that stand up but is still submerged = not as fresh but still good to eat. Eggs that float = very old, best not to use it. These eggs are still quite fresh; better than I expected. If I hadn’t checked I probably would have thrown them out to be on the safe side, and to avoid stinking out the house by cracking one open to check. The reason this method works is that the eggshells are porous, which means they allow some air to get through. Fresh eggs have less air in them, so they sink to the bottom.
